Puregold Pulls Ahead of Robinsons Retail and Metro Retail in First-Half Race

The grocery operator delivered the strongest combination of profitability and balance-sheet strength, while Robinsons Retail grappled with rising costs and Metro Retail staged a recovery from a smaller base. The Philippines’ biggest listed retailers all collected more at the checkout counter in the first half of 2026. The difference was how much they kept. Puregold Price Club Inc. pulled ahead of Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. and Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. by turning faster sales growth into substantially higher profits. The grocery and warehouse-club operator also entered the second half with the strongest balance sheet of the three, giving it room to expand, defend prices and absorb economic shocks without leaning heavily on borrowed money. Robinsons Retail remained a close competitor in sales and produced more gross profit than Puregold. But rising operating costs, higher interest expense and losses outside its core retail operations weighed on earnings. Metro Retail, the...

Puregold’s Sales Rise, but Supplier Payments Force a Draw on Investments

The Philippine retailer posted stronger first-half sales and wider margins, but supplier payments and inventory spending forced it to draw on investments and short-term borrowing. Puregold Price Club Inc. delivered the kind of first-half operating performance retailers usually welcome: faster sales, a healthier gross margin and evidence that shoppers continued to move through its stores. The cash-flow statement told a more complicated story. Sales at the Philippine grocery retailer rose 10.6% in the first half of 2026, while gross profit margin improved by 40 basis points to 19.5%. The results suggest Puregold, whose shares trade under the ticker PGOLD, was able to retain more of each peso collected at the checkout counter after accounting for the cost of merchandise. Yet the company’s operating cash flow fell to negative ₱3.79 billion. Large payments to suppliers, additional inventory stocking, and advances to suppliers absorbed more cash than the business generated during the p...

Puregold Outperforms 7-Eleven in Q1 2026 Profitability

In the Philippine retail sector, convenience is on the rise. But in the first quarter of 2026, profitability belonged to the supermarket. In the theatre of Philippine consumer retail, Philippine Seven has the more glamorous stage. Its 7-Eleven stores glow late into the night, scattered across city corners, provincial highways, and residential clusters. By the end of March 2026, the company operated 4,575 stores after opening 98 and closing 14 during the quarter, and it still aimed to reach 5,000 stores by year-end. Yet the quarter’s more compelling business story was not written under fluorescent convenience-store signage. It was written in the aisles of Puregold , where baskets are larger, supplier rebates matter, and operating leverage does what it's supposed to do. In the first quarter of 2026, Puregold Price Club decisively outperformed Philippine Seven in profitability , even as both companies benefited from resilient Filipino consumption.  The headline numbers tell t...

The Gaisanos vs. the Cos: Q1 2026 Reveals the Checkout Gap Between Metro Retail and Puregold

In Q1 2026, the Gaisanos’ MRSGI had a margin. Lucio Co’s Puregold had machinery. In Philippine retailing, scale is not merely a matter of size. It is a machine for turning footfall into profit. The first-quarter results of the Gaisanos’ Metro Retail Stores Group Inc. and Lucio Co’s Puregold Price Club Inc. show two companies operating in the same broad trade, but with very different economics. MRSGI is not standing still: sales rose, food retail improved, and net income nearly doubled from a low base. But Puregold’s quarter was of another order altogether: faster growth, better store productivity, stronger operating leverage and profitability that makes the comparison look less like a rivalry than a lesson in scale. MRSGI reported ₱9.38bn in net sales in the first quarter of 2026, up 5.4% from a year earlier. Food retail grew 6.3% , while general merchandise rose 2.5% . Blended same-store sales increased 2.9% , a respectable performance for a retailer with exposure to both su...

At Lucio Co’s Puregold, Q1 2026 Margins Rise Even as Expansion Eats Cash

The supermarket group is scaling profitably after a burst of store openings and acquisitions—but supplier payments, inventory build-up, and advances drained operating cash. In Philippine retailing, growth is often bought with rent, inventory, and patience. In the first quarter of 2026, Puregold Price Club showed that it could buy growth without sacrificing margins—at least on the income statement. The supermarket operator reported net sales of ₱58.8bn , up 12.1% from a year earlier, while net income rose 23.7% to ₱3.26bn . Earnings per share climbed to ₱1.14 , from ₱0.92 . The arithmetic was flattering: sales grew briskly, but profits grew faster.  The improvement was broad-based. Gross margin rose to 20.1% , from 19.6% a year earlier. Operating margin improved to 8.1% , from 7.6% . Net margin rose to 5.6% , from 5.0% . For a grocer, where price competition is fierce, and cost inflation rarely sleeps, half a percentage point of gross-margin expansion is not trivial. Management cr...
